Steam Awards 2018 – Steam’s 2020 cMA Awards
Posted On July 17, 2021
We’re looking back at the year’s best in PC gaming.
The award show was the culmination of an event that saw Valve, Valve’s parent company, take home $3.5 billion in cash and stock, and the first-ever Steam Awards were held at the New York Hilton Garden Inn.
In 2017, Steam launched Steam Cloud, a cloud-based service that lets developers build games on Valve’s servers and run them on its own hardware, which can then be played by consumers.
At the time, Valve said it would be “making every effort to support” the cloud service, which is still available.
The Steam Cloud service was introduced in 2018, and Valve said at the time it would offer “the ability to connect and store files on any server on any device”.
In 2018, it also announced it was expanding its cloud service to include SteamOS, an operating system developed by Microsoft and which will launch alongside Windows 10 in 2019.
A year later, the company announced that SteamOS would launch with the Steam Machine, a gaming console that will offer a much-needed upgrade to existing games on the PC.
In 2018 alone, SteamOS launched more than a quarter of all Steam games.
However, the Steam Cloud is the service Valve will be rolling out to all Steam owners in 2019, with the intention of enabling developers to make games for the platform in an affordable way.
“The Steam cloud offers an elegant solution for our game developers who need to run their games in the cloud, while still delivering high-quality graphics on all platforms,” Valve said in a blog post in 2018.
“Steam Cloud allows developers to take full advantage of the platform’s built-in cloud infrastructure and make games that run on all current and future Steam Machines.
Steam Cloud has the potential to deliver new and exciting experiences to players everywhere.”
While the Cloud has been available since 2018, Valve also launched Steam Machines with a Steam Controller in 2019 that were intended to offer a more streamlined experience.
However, Valve has said the Steam Machines will no longer be offered in the future.
As a result, Valve announced in 2018 that it was planning to discontinue its Steam Controller altogether in 2019 and the Steam Controller would be available on new devices starting in 2019 with the release of the Steam Switch.
The new controller will feature a smaller screen, a lower resolution and no built-up volume.
“Steam Controller will be discontinued in 2019,” the company wrote in a post on its blog in 2018 announcing the discontinuation of the original Steam Controller.
“This will allow us to focus on delivering great new features for the Steam Store and supporting our customers and partners.”
The Steam Controller has been an important part of Valve’s efforts to keep users happy and in the loop on the games they own, with Valve announcing in 2018 it had over 40 million registered users, which was up from only 9 million in 2018 and down from more than 30 million in 2017.
However the Steam Steam Controller is not a completely new device.
Earlier this year, Valve released a new Steam Controller called the Steam Keypad, which lets users use a virtual keyboard for navigating games and apps.
