When Walter Payton is named AP Offensive Player of the Year

Washington (AP) The Associated Press announced on Monday that Walter Payton, who has won five consecutive AP Offensive Players of the Week awards, will be named the AP Offensive Rookie of the Month.
Payton is coming off a season in which he led the league in rushing and rushing yards per game and averaged 9.9 yards per carry.
The NFL’s reigning Offensive Rookie was named AP Rookie of Week for the first time in his career, following a two-game stretch in which the All-Pro was named a PFF Pro Football Focus All-Decade first team selection.
Payton was the NFL’s leading rusher last season with 1,869 yards and 20 touchdowns.
The Associated Sports Editors named Payton their 2016 Rookie of The Year and AP Offensive Offensive Rookie.
He also earned two preseason AP All-American nods and a first-team AP All, First Team and Second Team selection.
